Managing Menopause Naturally: A Preferred Choice for Many African Women.

Most of my work as a menopause coach is carried out within my community - the black African women. As a champion, advocate, coach and mentor, I do my best to be equipped to offer an excellent service that caters to their needs in a culturally sensitive way. So I am really excited to have acquired certification in Managing Menopause Naturally.

While hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is becoming a common medical approach, many women, particularly of African descent, would rather turn to natural methods to manage menopause symptoms.

In many African cultures, there's centuries long traditions of using herbal remedies and natural methods for health issues and general wellness. Passed down over generations from our ancestors these methods were the norm and deeply embedded in our community life. There is a huge preference and cultural trust on natural health solutions and we have the added advantage of being surrounded by an abundance of healing herbs, plants, roots and organic foods that cater for every ailment.

Apart from mistrusting western medicine, the cost of conventional medicine can be prohibitive for the average African woman - effectively disqualifying them from such options as HRT (Hormone Replacement Therapy). In parts of Africa where access to healthcare is limited or expensive, natural and home remedies provide a more accessible and affordable alternative to manage menopause symptoms. So instead we turn to local herbs/ plants and foods known within our communities that offer similar benefits, i.e, that mimic estrogen in the body and help to reduce

menopausal symptoms.

While the decision to manage menopause naturally is influenced by various factors including cultural, economic, and personal health preferences, it offers substantial benefits.

Natural methods tend to have fewer side effects compared to HRT, which has been linked to increased risks of certain health issues like heart disease and breast cancer. This makes natural methods a safer choice for many women.

Natural menopause management often involves a holistic approach to health, encouraging lifestyle changes that not only alleviate menopausal symptoms but also improve overall health.

Managing menopause naturally allows women to take an active role in their health care. It also fosters a sense of community as women might share their knowledge of natural supplements and experiences with each other, creating a support network that is vital during menopause.

Utilising traditional remedies and methods aligns with cultural practices and beliefs, providing psychological comfort and continuity with women's heritage and identity.

For many of us, it is not only a matter of tradition but also a holistic, safer, and community-oriented choice that aligns with our overall lifestyle and values. One that empowers us to navigate the challenges of menopause with confidence and grace.
