2023 was a whole lot of school, but particularly so for me when I decided to start and facilitate a menopause support platform for Black African women - Ketura Woman. I started with just my pain and passion to share and hear from others going through the same experiences. I especially wanted to start conversations within my black African community and break the culture of silence around menopause.
I have learned many lessons since starting - below are some of them:
The power of simply talking.
In most African cultures, menopause is a topic shrouded in silence. Women often enter this phase of life unprepared, struggling alone with the physical, mental and emotional challenges it brings. Ketura Woman has provided a platform for breaking this silence. Listening to the women share their stories, I’ve learned about the immense power of “simply talking” about menopause. It demystifies the experience and empowers women to seek their needed help and support.
There is power in openness and honesty.
It has been crucial to create a safe space where women feel comfortable being vulnerable about their fears and challenges. This vulnerability has fostered a sense of solidarity and strength. It’s taught me that there is immense power in openness and honesty. When one woman shares her story, it paves the way for others to do the same, creating a ripple effect of empowerment.
The need for cultural sensitivity and understanding.
Each woman’s experience with menopause is unique, especially when viewed through the lens of cultural background. Through the group, I’ve learned the importance of being culturally sensitive and understanding the specific challenges Black African women face during menopause. This awareness has been vital in providing relevant and empathetic support.
The Need for Tailored Health Education.
One significant lesson is the need for tailored health education. Menopause is not a one-size-fits-all experience, and the information and advice offered need to reflect the diverse experiences of Black African women. This has highlighted the importance of culturally relevant educational materials and resources.
The Power of Peer Support.
Perhaps the most striking lesson has been the transformative power of peer support. The platform has become a source of strength and comfort for many women. Seeing the positive impact of shared experiences and mutual support has reinforced my belief in the importance of such groups in providing emotional and social support during menopause.
Taking Mental Health Seriously.
The mental health aspect of menopause is often overlooked - especially in our black African community. It’s rarely spoken about. Through the platform, I’ve learned how vital it is to address the mental health challenges that come with menopause. Providing a space where women can discuss their anxieties, depression, or mood swings associated with menopause has been crucial.
Finally - Running this platform has been an enriching experience. It has provided a safe space for women to share and learn and a personal journey of discovery and learning. I’ve witnessed the transformational power of shared experiences and community support. This journey has been enlightening, not just for the participants but also for me. I am excited and expectant about what 2024 has in store for me and my tribe of sisters as we journey menopause.
