Letter to my doctor

Dear Doctor,

I hope this letter finds you well.

I have been experiencing certain challenges in my health which I believe may be connected to the menopause. I'd like to book a consultation with you to discuss my symptoms and explore the possibility of developing a holistic care plan that takes into account my background, culture, beliefs, and values. As a Black African woman, I believe that understanding and respecting these aspects of my identity are crucial to providing an effective and inclusive healthcare plan that puts me first.

As an ethnic minority I realise that the health care plans in this country were designed with the local white patient in mind. As such, most of the solutions available are foreign to me and for the most part, I have struggled to open up to the typical white middle class male doctor when it comes to discussing certain aspects of my health.

Firstly I'd like to highlight the importance of acknowledging the cultural significance of menopause particularly in my community. Menopause is viewed  differently in many African cultures but for most, it is a taboo subject, and comes with many myths, whispers and old wives tales that create misconceptions. As a result there is a lack of knowledge and a general lack of trust of the western medical interventions/treatments of menopause. I would appreciate it if you could incorporate this understanding into our discussions and possible treatment plans. My whole attitude and response to menopause has been shaped by my culture, background, religious beliefs and values. Your recognising and valuing the cultural significance of menopause will go a long way in providing a holistic care package that will help me navigate this journey with confidence.

My personal beliefs, values and past experiences will influence how I will choose to manage menopausal symptoms. Traditional natural remedies, such as herbs and organic foods from nature's garden are deeply rooted in my  heritage. These remedies have been passed down through generations and are considered effective in promoting health and wellbeing. I'd appreciate your openness to discussing and incorporating these natural remedies alongside modern medical treatments. It is important for me to feel that my culture is respected and integrated into my overall health care plan. I kindly request your support and guidance in exploring various holistic approaches to managing my symptoms.

Lastly, I would like to express the significance of community and support networks in my journey through menopause. The experiences, advice, and understanding of other women who have gone through or are currently going through menopause can be invaluable. I would appreciate any resources or recommendations you can provide to connect me with support groups or networks where I can share experiences and learn from others who have similar backgrounds.

I'm simply asking that you develop a holistic care plan that recognises and embraces the unique differences I bring as a Black African woman navigating menopause. By considering my cultural background, beliefs, and values, we can create a care plan that not only addresses my physical symptoms but also promotes my overall well-being and empowerment.

Thank you for your understanding, compassion, and dedication to providing inclusive healthcare. I look forward to discussing these matters further during our next appointment.

Kind regards,

Vonayi Nyamazana
